General Wear & Tear

Maintenance

Common issues or symptoms:

Gravel driveway issues may include material disappearing or being pushed off the sides, gravel mixing with underlying soil or mud, and rutting in the wheel paths. These problems are typically caused by an inadequate base, the use of improper gravel material, and insufficient compaction during installation.

Washboarding (also called corrugation) is a common form of driveway wear and tear where the surface develops a series of small, repetitive ridges and dips, similar to a washboard, usually running perpendicular to traffic.
Why it’s a problem:

• Makes the driveway rough and uncomfortable to drive on
• Causes gravel to migrate off the surface
• Increases wear on vehicles
• Leads to faster breakdown of the driveway structure
How to prevent or fix washboarding:
• Use crushed aggregate with fines so it locks together
• Maintain a proper crown for drainage
• Rework and compact the surface, not just blade it
• Add fines or base material if the surface is too coarse

Drainage issues:
Common drainage issues may include water flowing along the driveway surface, standing water in low areas, and soft or muddy conditions following rainfall. These problems are typically the result of inadequate crowning, improper slope, or the absence of proper drainage features such as ditches or culverts.

Road/Driveway Base failure issues:
Driveway sinking or developing dips
Pumping mud when driven on
Your driveway feels soft under equipment or vehicles – Usually means the subgrade wasn’t prepped right or needs stabilization.
Edge & transition problems or drop-off where the driveway meets the road
Gravel spilling into yard or ditch
Rough entrance that can scrape vehicles
To resolve these issues it needs reshaping, edge control, or proper tie-ins.
